Measurement Quality Attributes

Uncertainty is a measure in which these attributes are combined by calculation into a summary, which is then stated as a single value.

Often, knowing this summary value - the uncertainty - is sufficient.

If the uncertainty in a measurement result is small enough so that it does not interfere with the usefulness of that result, we don't need to look any deeper.

If the uncertainty is too large for our purpose, however, we may need to find a way to improve the measurement process.

In this case, it may be necessary to understand each of the separate contributing influences to measurement uncertainty so that a successful improvement strategy can be planned. Let's look at the definition of each attribute.
