Mechanical Balance

There are several types of mechanical balances. We will look briefly at a common type: a double-platform balance.

With a double-platform balance, you put the sample on one pan and a set of known counterweights on the other, until the two pans balance.

This type of balance is effective for comparing the weights of masses of two samples, or comparing a quantity of a known weight.
