Using a Torque Wrench

Break-away Torque

If you were to tighten a series of fasteners to a torque of 260 inch-pounds, you might find if you were to use a torque wrench to loosen or breakaway these fasteners, that the breakaway torque would be a uniform 225 inch-pounds.

It is generally true that the torque required to loosen a fastener, or the breakaway torque, will be in some direct relationship to the applied torque.

Once you know this relationship, you could loosen a fastener by means of this breakaway torque test to determine the actual application torque.
